Mini London Marathon training.

Our 25 mini-marathon entrants have now completed their 3rd week of training. Today, under a likely welcomed grey sky, Mrs Bell put them through their paces.

They will be running 1 mile on Saturday 26th April 2025, from Horse Guards parade to the Mall.

Here are some tips below, for getting your child started on their own marathon training journey.

1. Start Slow and Build Gradually

For young runners, it’s important to keep the focus on fun and gradual progress. Begin with shorter distances and increase the distance over time. This builds endurance safely while making the training feel achievable and enjoyable.

2. Mix in Fun Activities

Running doesn’t have to be all about distance. Try integrating games like tag, relay races, or obstacle courses to keep things exciting. This will also help children develop a love for the sport while building coordination and agility.

3. Focus on Proper Technique

While kids may not be running long distances yet, good form can help prevent injuries and set the stage for better performance later. Teach them the basics: keeping their posture upright, taking short steps, and focusing on breathing.

4. Hydrate and Fuel Properly

Proper hydration and nutrition are key to keeping kids energised during training. Encourage them to drink water regularly and fuel up with healthy snacks like fruits, nuts, and whole grains before and after their runs.

5. Rest and Recovery

Kids need plenty of time to rest and recover after training sessions. Be sure to schedule easy days and active rest, like walking or stretching, to prevent burnout or injury. Recovery is just as important as the runs themselves!

6. Celebrate Small Wins

Whether it's running a longer distance or simply finishing a tough workout, make sure to celebrate their achievements. Positive reinforcement helps build confidence and keeps them motivated for the next step in their training.

Remember, marathon training for kids is all about fostering a love for movement and healthy habits that will last a lifetime. Start with fun, short runs and gradually work up as they build confidence. Most importantly, ensure that the experience is fun and rewarding!

Happy running!
