How has the author used symbolism in 'The Matchbox Diary'?

This week in Year 5 we have started reading 'The Matchbox' Diary, about Italian immigration to America in the early 1900s. We have been thinking about metaphors, symbolism and onomatopoeia in preparation for poetry writing using this lovely stimulus. In Maths we have been subtracting and in Science we have continued to explore materials, including insulation and dissolving. In RE we have been looking at the Mandir and the features of this Hindu place of worship. We have also continued to develop our handwriting and reading skills. Have you done a Reading WOW yet?
