  • What has been your favourite part of this week?

    What a week! Most of Year 5 went to Kingswood on their residential, and we had the best time. We did archery, wood skills, problem solving and more. We even braved the 3G swing! The children were incredible and showed amazing independence and resilience. They kept their bedrooms tidy and supported their friends. The adults didn't even mind being woken up at 3am because they knew the children were having so much fun!... Well, maybe they minded a little!

    The children who stayed went bowling on Monday and then took part in Forest School and a wonderful Dragon's Den style activity, where they designed new equipment for the playground. 

    When all of us were back together, we took part in a carousel of activities on Thursday morning, and learnt about the 5Ks of Sikhism, as well as revising our arithmetic skills. We celebrated National Fruit Cocktail Day in Art, creating beautiful tissue paper collages. 

    It is hard to believe that there are only two weeks left before half term... our wonderful Year 5s are nearly in Year 6! This week has definitely demonstrated how mature and grownup they are.

  • Why do we need to be careful when browsing news stories and photographs online?

    This week in Year 5, we have been continuing to learn about decimals and fractions in Maths, thinking carefully about ordering and rounding. In Literacy, we completed our Peppered Moth Fact Files as part of our Star Write. We were concentrating on formal tone, scientific language and formal fronted adverbials. 

    In PSHE, we learnt about edited photographs and how easy it is to use apps to alter images. We spoke about how dangerous this can be and how we should always be mindful that not everything we see on the Internet is true. In the same lesson, we looked at fake news and how to spot false news articles. 

    We are so excited to go on residential next week, and the children staying in school also have really exciting things to look forward to!

  • What did you enjoy most about Victorian Day?

    This week in Year 5, we have been drafting our non-chronological reports all about peppered moths. We have been focusing closely on the life cycle of the peppered moth, as well as the history and evolution of these fascinating creatures. In Maths, we have been continuing to learn about decimals and using place value grids to help us explain what each digit in the decimal represents. We have then been converting these decimals to fractions. 

    In Science, we propagated plants to demonstrate the process of asexual reproduction. In History, we learnt about Queen Victoria and her impact on Victorian Britain and the rest of the British Empire at the time. In DT, we explored CAMs and the different ways in which they move. In RE, we started looking at Sikhism and we learnt about Guru Nanak and his influence upon the religion. 

    By far the most exciting part of our week, though, was Victorian Day! We came into school dressed as Victorian children, and we became fully immersed; learning what life would have been like. We played traditional Victorian games, wrote in silence, recited times tables and recited the Lord's Prayer. Our teachers were very strict and we even got caned!

  • What is the story of the peppered moth?

    What a lovely first week back! Year 5 have been busy reading 'Moth', a book about evolution and adaptation. The children dissected tulips in order to identify the male and female parts of the plant. In Maths, we have started our Decimals unit and in Computing we explored the Lady Bug Munch code on Scratch. We have started our Victorians topic in History, and we cannot wait for our Victorian Day on Monday!

  • What did you enjoy most about the Easter experience?

    First and foremost, congratulations to all of Year 5 for their incredible efforts and preparation for their Easter production, which they performed for the first time in front of the whole school on Friday morning. They are due to perform twice to parents and families next week, and as a Year 5 team we are so unbelievably proud of them for the hard work and dazzling performances put in – everyone in the audience was extremely emotional! Special mentions must go to: Caleb for playing Jesus with so much passion, and singing beautifully; Elenia, for stepping in at the last minute for Anvee who was unwell on Friday, all the soloists who sang so confidently by themselves; the technical crew for lighting and sound and of courses everyone in the production for performing so well as a team.

    In maths this week, we finished our unit on fractions and in English we have been writing our own free verse poetry. Next week, we will be baking our own individual vegan apple pies with our own personally improved recipes for D&T – a delicious thing to look forward to!

  • How is hydroelectric power renewable?

    This week, it was Science week! We learned all about challenging stereotypes of what scientists can be like, and how there are so many successful scientists who are of every gender, skin colour and religion. Anyone can do science! In Geography, we had a big science link this week, and we have been continuing on our journey of rivers, but this week focussing on how rivers can be used sustainably as a renewable energy resource. Next week, we will be making our own hydroelectric dam models and still request as many 4 or 8 pint milk bottles so that as many of us can do this experiment as possible.

     Year 5 have also been completing their Mathematics booklets - testing their knowledge in arithmetic and reasoning. We have been busily practising our Easter production, and the singing and acting is really taking shape, we are all extremely excited to perform for you all in the last week of term! We still have a few children left to complete some due to various illnesses last week, but we are really so proud of all he hard work the children have put in to these booklets, and we look forward to discussing these with you at parents evening next week.
