Year 2: When did the Great fire of London start and what caused it?

To start off our Great Fire of London topic, we investigated the timeline of the fire. We now know that the fire started in a bakery on Pudding Lane, on September 2nd, 1666. It lasted for around 5 days. Experts think that it was caused by a spark in Thomas Farriner’s bakery, after the fire had not been put out properly. It began in the early hours of Sunday morning, and spread across London very quickly.

The children are already asking lots of questions about this topic and are eager to know more. We are all looking forward to our school trip on the 8th May to visit the Monument to the Great Fire of London and learn more from the Tower of London!
