Year 2: How do we stay safe online?

On Tuesday we took part in Safer Internet Day. The aim of the day is to promote awareness of what the internet is and how we should be using it safely. This year’s theme was all about how to spot scams. We spent the morning on Tuesday being scam spotters, and the children used their knowledge to spot and stop people falling for scams in the BBC Live lesson we watched.

We also read a story about Smartie the Penguin, where the children had to help Smartie navigate through running out of screen time, being asked to share passwords by a friend, and being treated unkindly by another friend online. At all times, the children were reminded that the key to working through these problems was by telling an adult they trust and asking for help.

The children have shown us a good understanding of how they can use the internet for a lot of interesting things (researching, speaking to family, shopping, listening to music, gaming etc) and we had a good discussion about how to be safe when using the internet.
