Nursery: How can you decorate for Diwali?

This week in Nursery, we have been learning about the festival of Diwali and how it is celebrated. We have learnt that Diwali is the festival of light and the children have enjoyed decorating Nursery with lots of battery-operated candles. The children have also experimented to make their own salt dough to make diva lamps. They measured 1 cup of flour, 1 cup of salt and 1 cup of water and they each chose which colour that they would like to add before they mixed all of the ingredients together. If their mixture was too dry, they added more water and if it was too wet, they added more flour. They then had lots of fun exercising their fingers to shape the dough into divas before adding lots of gems and sparkle to decorate them. We then had to wait a long time whilst they dried in the oven. We were then able to add the candles and the children were very excited to take them home to decorate their homes.

We also made various Rangoli using different materials, including a very large Rangoli flower, which the children made collaboratively using rice and powder paint. The children have also been developing their pen skills drawing Mehndi onto paper hands. We also learnt a Diwali poem about diva lamps.
