Year 1
Welcome to Year 1
In Year 1 we have lots of fun with our exciting and creative topics. We link our topics through all areas of the National Curriculum and ensure the children have lots of practical and fun activities to inspire their imagination. To support the children with their transition from Reception we begin the year with an Early Years approach and gradually build up to more formal learning. We ensure the children have a well-thought-out and planned for continuous provision to enable them to continue to develop their independence when completing a wide range of activities.
The exciting topics we cover in Year 1 are............
-
Dinosaurs - We look at changes that occurred to the world, how fossils are made, and we even make our own. We also have a dinosaur workshop who visit the school, the children get to explore real fossils and meet a Tyrannosaurs Rex.
-
Where in the World? - In this geography unit, we look at what countries are in the UK. We then look at what seasons the UK has and how climate change is impacting them. We then look at maps, identify map symbols that are used and then look at the physical and human features of our school grounds.
-
Oceans - We look at the different oceans and the animals that live in them. We also look at maps and the different continents.
-
Castles - We look at features of castles and how they have changed over time. We investigate what castles were used for in the past and what life was like inside them.
-
Mexico - We enjoy looking at traditional tales and creating our own endings. We spend time exploring different materials and finding the strongest material to build a castle suitable for a King and Queen.
-
Seaside Holidays - We look at what made seaside holidays popular and what they were like 100 years ago. We then look at similarities and differences between seaside holidays then and now.
We have two classes in Year 1 Red Class and Rose Class. Miss Semmens, Ros and Debbie teach in Red class and Mrs Marwood, Angela, Nancy and Maria teach in Rose class.
Year 1 really is a fantastic year and the children have so much to enjoy and look forward to.
