Children shine in National Maths Challenge

30 children from Years 5 and 6 have performed impressively in the national United Kingdom Maths Trust Junior Maths Challenge.

Our children really showed how brilliant they are, achieving 6 gold certificates, 4 silver certificates and 12 bronze certificates.  You'll realise just what an achievement this is, when we share that:

- the challenge is open to children in Year 8 and below, so some of our children were competing against children 3 years older than them

- the top 8-9% of entrants get a gold certificate, the top 16-17% get silver and the top 25% get bronze.  20 of our children were in the top quarter of children entering the event.

- 5 of our children have qualified for the next round, known as the 'Kangaroo Round' of the competition.

The Junior Mathematical Challenge is a 60-minute, multiple-choice challenge. It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. The problems on the Junior Mathematical Challenge are designed to make students think. Most are accessible, yet can still challenge those with more experience.

The UK Mathematics Trust was founded in 1996 and its charitable aim is to advance the education of young people in the subject.

The charity does this by working with hundreds of volunteers across the UK to organise competitions which promote problem-solving and teamwork and other mathematical enrichment activities.

The challenge provides an excellent enrichment opportunity to stretch our mathematicians well beyond their day to day curriculum - simply being selected to participate is an honour in itself - and we are so proud of everyone who took part and achieved the school's best results to date.
